      Fossil fuels, like coal and oil/gas, are the remains of animals and plants that were preserved in the earth crust for up to 650 million years. The resulting substances are high in carbon and hydrogen, and can therefore be burned as an energy source (fuel).

      Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically milli of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years
