  Physically it comes from cells called follicles which we have in our skin. We have different amounts of follicles at different places on our bodies. This is controlled by our genes. Hormones (chemical messengers) tell the follicles to grow hair or to not. In some diseases like allopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles so you can get patches of baldness.
