The key to getting any funding through research is to simply talk to people, tell them what your doing and somtimes company’s like the ones I am working with will say wow we like the idea count us in and they will give you money to progress. When I first started I talked to as many people as i could to get the aims across. If I won the money it would make it just easier to make the transparent engine and make talking to others about what i am doing so much better

I have 3 years worth of funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), but I have to present my results to the university and pass an oral exam at the end of every year to make sure my research is worth while, and I’m not wasting their money. Which is fair enough really!
My experiments are very expensive though so I often have to apply for extra grant money to meet the costs.

Yes, I have 3 years (well 4 if you include my Masters) worth of funding for my research. It is provided by the BBSRC (biotechnological and biological sciences research council).

I am a bit different to the others. The university pays me a salary. From this I have three jobs to do, teaching students, doing schools and public outreach and doing my research in whatever time is left over. No matter what I do, the university still pays for me to work here.

But, if I want to buy some equipment or travel to some schools to showcase our work, or employ other scientists to help me, I have to apply for what we call a “research grant” from the government. I just had money run out from the last 7 years to fund the research I did in computer security. I am doing the emotional computing work at the minute to prove it works so that I can get another grant for my new research.

In computer science, technology changes so fast and brings lots of new and unexpected problems. We tend to work on different problems every 5 years or so unlike in other sciences as new problems happen. So we constantly apply for new grant money. I hope they like my new research and give me the money. This is also why I would love the money from this event, to kick off our new outreach roadshow and to prove to our funders that it is worthwhile!!
