I shouldnt admit this but I sometimes struggled with maths. As a scientist, maths is essential (stats and all that jazz) but if you find maths difficult it doesnt mean you can;t do science, you just have to recognise this weakness and work hard to get better at it…don’t give up!
I found maths really hard because I didnt see how it was related to anything. Why do I care what y is equal to? But then I realised as I got better at science, then the stuff in maths was really just a neat way for scientists to talk to each other without using words. Once I started using maths to express myself and when the x and the y had actual meaning I realised I was good at maths. I am the only lecturer in our department who did not do an A level in maths, but I am just as good as the others at it now.
